We give driving lessons in steps, according to the RIS method (Driving Lessons in Steps). You also get a practice book. This contains homework that you can do prior to each lesson, so you are well prepared behind the wheel every time. Because this way you are better prepared for your lessons, the hours behind the wheel are much more effective.
Also, we always give two 60-minute lessons in a row. You will need fewer driving lessons in total to pass your exam because of this unique approach.

When may I start car driving lessons?
You may take driving lessons as early as 16.5 years of age and take practical tests starting on your 17th birthday. If you pass, you may only drive with a guide until your 18th birthday. For example, your parents, grandparents or neighbors. This companion must be at least 27 years old and have held a driver's license for 5 years. Also, your companion must never have committed a serious traffic offense. Your escort(s) must be listed on your escort pass.
Note: apply for the supervisor pass right at the beginning of your driver training. This is because you can only apply for your driver's license at the municipality upon presentation of this companion pass.
What do I need to know about the trial lesson?
The free trial lesson is meant to help you get to know the instructor and see what a driving lesson is like. You'll also have the opportunity to ask questions. After the lesson, you'll receive feedback and advice about the number of lessons needed to have a good chance of pass your driving test.
How many driving lessons do I need before I can get my driver’s license?
According to a CBR survey of exam candidates (2025), the average number of hours for obtaining a driver's license is around 43. But since everyone learns at their own speed, the number of driving lessons you need naturally varies from person to person. Our instructor can estimate how many driving lessons you will need. You can find more information on the CBR website.
What is the success rate of Rijschool Zomer
Because of our unique teaching method and experienced driving instructors, our students are well guided during lessons. This is also reflected in our success rate, which is above the national average.
Should I already have certain knowledge of cars before I start car driving lessons?
No, you don't need any prior knowledge. But it does work to your advantage if you already have some knowledge of theory, then you can immediately apply this knowledge during your driving lessons.
What is the average duration of a car driving lesson?
A driving lesson with us lasts 45 minutes, but we routinely schedule two lessons in a row. So you have 90 minutes of lessons each time, so you learn to drive even faster.
Can I also take driving lessons in an automatic transmission car?
Yes, that is possible. We have both a manual shift transmission car and an automatic transmission car.
Can I also take driving lessons in another language?
Yes, we have Dutch-, English- and Spanish-speaking WRM-certified instructors.
Can I also take driving lessons in the evenings and weekends?
Yes, we also give driving lessons in the evenings and on Saturdays.
What cars do you teach in?
Our teaching cars are a Volkswagen Golf (2022) and Volkswagen Polo (2022).
Where will I be picked up?
The pick-up location is at the station Bijlmer Arena, Station Sloterdijk, central station of Utrecht or Central station of Zaandam depending from where you live. We feel it is important to devote the entire lesson to teaching, and to you as a student. By having a central pick-up location, we want to avoid you being mostly busy taking the other student(s) home.
What are administrative fees for the practical exam?
If you are going to take the practical driving exam, you must pay administrative fees. This amounts to €138.50. If you look at our driving lesson packages, you will see that the practical exam is included. So why do you still have to pay €138.50 in administrative fees?
In the package, the costs from our side are included. Think of the instructor’s time, the fuel for the car, insurance, scheduling, and everything else needed to make sure you can take your practical exam properly. These are separate from the CBR administrative fees. The €138.50 are the costs that the CBR charges for providing their services. This is why these are calculated separately.
Are you taking a fear-of-failure exam? Then the administrative fees are slightly higher, namely €195.
